How your address affects the price
Your price includes the driver's drive from their base to your pickup, on to the drop-off and back, plus the loading time you choose. Within the city that drive is short and the loading time is most of the cost. Across the wider area, from one town on the list to another, the drive grows but it is usually still the smaller part of the price. Most local jobs here are small: one or two hours of loading, a Medium van, a short drive across the city.
Drivers are based in different places around the city, and the form matches your job to a driver before it shows you the price, so the route time it uses is the real one for that driver. You are not charged for a driver coming from the other side of the county when one is based near you.
Moves out of the area
A man with a van will take you anywhere in the country. The loading time costs the same as on a local job, and the longer drive is built into the price you see. One recent job carried two sofas and a coffee table from Southampton to Swansea. End-of-term runs home for students are the most common long trip from here; see the student moves page.
Moving into Southampton from elsewhere works the same way, with the addresses the other way round.
Differences across the area
The city centre and the streets around the universities are mostly controlled parking zones, so loading needs planning there. The parking guide explains the council's £14 bay suspension and what to do on yellow lines and in resident bays. In the suburbs and the surrounding towns, parking outside the door is usually easier and loading is quicker. Blocks of flats, wherever they are, need the lift and the floor number mentioned to the driver.
Student areas, including Portswood, Highfield, Polygon and Swaythling, follow the universities' calendar. Vans are busiest there in the weeks around the start and end of term, which the student move dates guide sets out.
What to book
Whole homes are on the house removals page, one-off items on the single items and furniture page, and work for shops and offices on the business moves page. The van sizes page helps you choose between a Medium, a Large and a Luton, and the prices page explains the whole pricing model. The home page is the overview.
